The process of transforming a plastic compound into an elastic vulcanised rubber is known as vulcanisation. The term ‘vulcanisation’ was coined by Gould in 1839 to refer to the process of the interaction of sulphur and rubber in a co-heating process. It was later discovered that in addition to sulphur, there are many other chemicals that can also ‘vulcanise’ rubber. The essence of the rubber vulcanisation process is that the rubber molecular chains are chemically cross-linked under the action of chemical or physical factors into a spatial mesh structure. Therefore, the term vulcanisation now refers to the process by which many chemicals, including sulphur, cross-link with rubber.
Vulcanisation is the final process in the manufacturing process of rubber products, in which rubber undergoes a series of complex chemical changes that transform plastic rubber into elastic or hard rubber, thus obtaining improved physical and mechanical properties and chemical properties.
